Break Up Your Fallow Ground!

By Carol L. Doyel−

Are you in a season that you’re not experiencing the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22? I know many Christians who profess Jesus as their savior but don’t seem to have a strong conviction or testimony – they lack fruit. They’re land is fallow – seedless, lying dormant. We all go through dry seasons, periods that seem parched. Maybe you feel like God is silent and He’s not responding to your prayers and petitions. May I suggest that God is the same yesterday, today and forever so the problem may not be that God is purposely silent but it may be that something has shifted in your heart.

It could be that you are not walking in obedience and it has come between you and your relationship with the Lord.

I know there are times the Lord may discipline us to teach us how to be still and listen carefully, above all the other distractions and things that vie for our attention but we must learn to set things aside to pursue God with all of our heart! A pastor at the church we attended for eight years in Sisters Oregon, a Four Square Church, once said something that I’ll always remember, “we need to seek God diligently, listen carefully, and obey completely”. To hear Him we must seek Him. It may require us to be still and wait for long periods of time – the further we’ve strayed from Him the longer it may take to hear Him.

The sign that you are not hearing God is an indicator that you have gotten off the path at some point or chosen your will over God’s, or worse, allowed a thought to turn into an action that has led to sin that has become a pattern or habit in your life that has quenched the Holy Spirit and prevented God from hearing your prayers. Thankfully we serve a God that is a compassionate god and he knows our heart and His mercies are new every morning. But we have a part, we must respond to God’s goodness, by simply seeking, knocking and asking.

Hosea 10:12 says, “Sow for yourselves righteousness: Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness on you.”

Invite God to show you where you have allowed thoughts or emotions to come in that are not pleasing to Him, ask Him to search your heart and show you where you have maybe tucked away offense or other negative emotions that can fester and infect your spiritual life. Ask God to help break up the fallow ground so that as you seek Him, pray, and read the Word the seeds that are planted can begin to germinate, take root and produce a great harvest in your life and overflow into the lives of others around you.

To overcome the dry fallow land stop doing whatever you’re doing and seek Him, be still and know He is God, wait…wait on the Lord until He rains righteousness on you!
