1906 Lodge: Romantic Getaway

By Sue Gillingham –

Lounging in front of a fireplace, snuggling in a heavenly bed, relaxing in a swirling spa tub, taking long walks on the beach hand-in-hand… if this sounds romantic, then the 1906 Lodge at Coronado Beach is the perfect destination for you and your special someone.

Tucked away in the magical seaside community of Coronado, California, this seventeen room and suite hideaway was designed with romance, relaxation, and rejuvenation in mind.

fall scents for your home

Visitors have been drawn to the island of Coronado for over a century. Harper’s Weekly in September 1890 declared “there is no time of the year when it is not agreeable to loiter there, and people go into the surf in January as well as in June.”

The same is true today, and you can enjoy old world charm and five star amenities at this Coronado Hotel. Opened in 2009, the restoration of an historic boarding house and construction of luxury suites was overseen by 50+ ex-road warrior Sue Gillingham. After 25 years of the corporate world, with too many nights in cookie cutter hotel rooms, Sue had the vision of a very different travel experience. In the romance department, a warm glowing fire and a deep soaking tub were tops on her list. Her husband of 30 years, Dave, was happy to help choose the perfect spa tub. Sue was able to equip 10 of the 17 rooms with tubs, and fireplaces in 11.

Tea Garden bedroom

Top choice for romance: the Tea Garden suite with its fabulous gold leaf decorated bed facing the fireplace, huge spa tub, and porch overlooking the courtyard (also perfect for watching the Coronado sunset).

North Island bedroom

If you’re looking for a room your husband is sure to enjoy, stay in the North Island Suite. Its aviation theme, generous leather easy chairs, huge spa tub, and private porch to catch the ocean breeze are always winners.

Check-in and wander down to the parlor at 5:00 PM for wine, lemonade, and snacks while you decide on the perfect restaurant for dinner. The innkeeper will be happy to recommend the right restaurant, the most romantic table, and even make your reservations.

Breakfasts at the 1906 Lodge are not to be rushed. Start with a pass through the continental breakfast buffet and don’t miss their homemade granola, muffins, and scones. Fresh fruit, boiled eggs, yogurt and toast are always on hand. Your morning innkeeper will describe the hot entrée special of the day and serve it to you at your table. Dawdle over coffee or tea, and plan your day’s activities.

World famous Coronado Beach is just a short two block walk away. Grab a cup of  “to go” coffee for an early morning shell collecting walk. Ask the innkeeper for beach chairs and towels, and spend the whole day. Or, for true romance, plan a sunset stroll down the 1.5 mile long wide beach.

If you’re looking for fun activities, the choices in Coronado are almost limitless. There’s shopping, spas, and fitness centers. Walking tours, Segway tours, and historic tours. Rent a bicycle and wander the charming streets of Coronado or ride down the 7 mile long Silver Strand with the Pacific Ocean on one side and San Diego Bay on the other. There’s even live theaters at two venues. And for an old fashioned movie experience, enjoy the newly renovated historic Village Theater with its heavy red curtains and art deco murals of Coronado and San Diego skylines.

Whether you have a week or just a weekend, the 1906 Lodge and Coronado are the perfect romantic destination.
